Operating cost of water heaters

Every appliance has two price tags. The first is the price you pay when you purchase the appliance.
The second is the cost of operating the appliance over its lifetime. You might be surprised if you
consider how much it costs to operate an appliance compared to what seemed to be a good deal
when you purchased it.

When you shop for a new appliance, look for the ENERGY STARĘ label. Appliances w/ this label
usually exceed minimum federal standards by a substantial amount. ENERGY STARĘ rated products
are always among the most efficient available today.

Also look for the Energy Guide label displayed on most major appliances. The bright yellow & black
Energy Guide labels do NOT tell you which appliance is the most energy efficient, but they will tell
you how much it will cost to operate the appliance so you can make your own comparisons.

Efficiency

The least expensive water heaters are the most expensive to operate. Water heating is the third
largest energy expense in your home. It normally accounts for about 14% of the utility bill. Heaters
10 years old or older probably have an efficiency of no higher than 50%

Sink / tub drain care & maintenance

In sinks or tubs where hair is washed, use a plastic or metal "hair catcher" or screen to catch hair
before it gets into the drain.

Don't pour grease down kitchen drains; pour liquid grease from cooking into empty tin cans & set in
refrigerator until solidified; put can into tightly closed plastic bag, wrap in newspapers & put into
trash bag.

Cleaning garbage disposers

Garbage disposers clean themselves if used properly. Do not put lye or other chemical drain pipe
cleaners into the garbage disposer.

Periodically & always after disposing of fibrous food waste, purge the drain line by filling the sink w/
two or three inches of cold water. Turn on the garbage disposer & allow this water to run through w/
no waste added.

Before going away from home for several days, make sure all waste have been flushed out of the
garbage disposer to avoid creating odors. If odors should occur through an oversight, they can be
removed by running orange, lemon peels or ice cubes through the garbage disposer.
